What Are Pacers – and Why They Matter in Every Run Club

Have you ever joined a run and noticed those runners who seem to glide effortlessly at a steady speed, calling out encouragement and cheering others on? Those are pacers – the unsung heroes of every great run club.
A pacer is a runner who sets and maintains a consistent pace during a run. They’re the friendly faces who help others hit their goals – whether that’s chasing a personal best (PB), getting more comfortable with a steady jog, or simply making it through a 5K without stopping.
But pacers aren’t just about time. They’re about confidence, community, and inclusion.
Why Pacers Are So Important
They take the pressure off: When someone else is managing the pace, you can relax, focus on your breathing, and just run.
They create structure: Pacers give every session rhythm and purpose – whether you’re aiming for a specific time or finding your stride.
They motivate and support: Pacers are often the loudest cheerleaders, helping you push when it gets tough and celebrating every finish, big or small.
They make running inclusive: Not everyone runs at the same speed – and that’s the beauty of it. Having pacers for different paces means no one is left behind.
How We Do It At She Strides
At She Strides, we believe an inclusive run club means catering for all speeds – both those chasing PBs and those taking their first steps. Our pacers make that possible. They bridge the gap between experience levels, making sure every woman feels seen, supported, and strong – no matter her pace.
A typical run with She Strides has something for everyone. We offer a 3km newbie option, which is a relaxed walk-run session that’s perfect for those starting out or returning to running after a break.
For those ready to take it further, our 5km+ routes are split into paced groups, usually ranging from 6 min/km to 7 min/km, depending on the location and runners that week. Each group has its own dedicated pacer, and our larger groups have two – one leading the way and one at the back – to make sure every runner feels supported from start to finish.

Final Thoughts
Pacers play a simple but vital role: they help every runner find their rhythm. They make our runs feel organised, supportive, and welcoming – no matter your speed or experience.
At She Strides, they’re a big part of what makes our community work. They keep things moving smoothly, make sure no one runs alone, and remind us that progress looks different for everyone.
